This stunningly original 88'' 1957 Land Rover Series 1 is considered to be one of the best preserved examples in existence. Having never been restored it retains the character that only an untouched vehicle can achieve. The build of chassis 111-8-00296 was completed on 03/ 10/ 57 and the vehicle was dispatched from the factory to James Gibbons Motors ltd, Glasgow, Scotland on 17/ 10/ 57. The Land Rover stayed in Scotland and obviously led a very easy life. The very low mileage reading of 45000 looks to genuine judging by the tightness of the gear selector and the minimal wear on the brass bushes on the pedal shaft.
I acquired it five years ago and the only works necessary were to rebuild the brakes, fit four new tyres, rebuild the carburettor, fit a completely new ignition system, fit a new canvas hood and flush out all of the fluids. Incredibly there has never been any welding or repairs to the chassis or bulkhead and none will be necessary for another 64 years hopefully!
Having owned several variants of series 1, 2 and 3 land rover's for the last thirty years I can honestly say that the late Series 1 models drive the best of all the SI's as they received the updated recirculating ball steering box in 56 which made the steering much lighter and nicer to use. Forget your 80'', SII's and SIII's these SI's with that lovely torquey 2 litre petrol motor really are the pick of the bunch....
