1959 Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina ‘PF’ Coupe Series 1
Ferrari’s first real GT car and the first in a long lineage of Ferrari Gran Turismo road-cars
The new 250 GT coupe was introduced at the 1958 Paris Motor Show and was a decisive step forward toward true series production for Ferrari. With this new coupe, Pinin Farina coachwork replaced the Beano- and Elena-built cars, and 355 examples were built by the time production concluded.
A true “gentleman’s Ferrari” in every sense of the phrase thanks to its elegant styling and luxurious interior – the new 250 GT “PF Coupe” became Ferrari’s most commercially successful model.
Under the bonnet was Ferrari’s renowned 3. 0-liter Colombo V-12, producing 240 hp at 7, 000 rpm and topped with three twin-choke Weber carburetors. Born and developed in the crucible of motorsport, this engine provided the coupe with a top speed just shy of 150 mph, and it could reach 60 mph in seven seconds, which is impressive for a car of its class and faster than many comparable offerings from Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Maserati.
Chassis 1479GT was built in 1959 as one of a series of only 346 similar cars produced in the three year period from 1958 to 1960 and left the factory spec’d in Bianco Max Mayer with the roof in Verde-Azzurro and the interior in Nero leather. It was a Left-Hand Drive car with drum brakes, Borrani wire wheels and as an early car, had the inside plug engine. It was also ordered with a bonnet scoop and unusually, was one of very few cars fitted by the factory with Lucas electrics as it was destined for England. It was supplied to Garage Francorchamps in 1959 and had only one owner from then until 1997 – the McCloud Moore family in the UK. It was subsequently purchased by David Cooke, the former Captain of the England Rugby team who had purchased the car in 2000 from VSOC in the Netherlands.
Bell Sport & Classic are privileged to offer this very late Series 1 example (6th last built) now presented in Blu Nart with Beige Connelly hide.
Having covered 88, 000 kms, which is believed to be genuine from new, beautifully presented & supported by a well detailed history file, this elegant V12 powered Ferrari is a true head turner, whether on the open road, or concours lawn.
