We are delighted to present for sale this early 1972 Land Rover® Lightweight, which has been rebuilt onto a Galvanised Chassis. This Lightweight is just the 431st Series 3 model ever made, with only 4 keepers since military release.
Externally, this has all the features one would hope to see on a “good” Lightweight – the front bumperettes, military lifting eyes, bridging plate, bonnet mounted spare, vintage number plates, rear bumperettes, split tailgate, original military plastic screw lenses, etc etc. A set of our 750 chevron tyres are fitted, which are self cleaning, hard wearing and also larger than standard to give a strong stance and additional gearing when in the cruise, which is a welcome addition. All of this culminates, in our opinion, to a very handsome lightweight indeed, which looks as though it has just left the forces.
The interior is largely standard – with three front deluxe seats, and matting to the footwells. It is pleasing to see so much of the original, now obsolete lightweight items are still present – the military fly screens, heater with front de-mist pipes and vents, wiper motor cover and convoy light switch to name a few. The rear is unfitted, but could house bench seats on request for £595 which would bring seating for seven passengers including the driver.
Out on the road, this lightweight has a well sorted feel – this is likely due to the fact it has been rebuilt onto a Galvanised chassis, which is particularly uncommon to see in Lightweights, due to the rarity of them! The petrol engine is sweet, and a reconditioned gearbox means a nice tight feel when out on the road. There is evidence of new components in other major areas too – with a new master cylinder, all new brake lines, new carburettor and fuel filter, recent canvas and a new exhaust – a new head gasket has also been fitted purely as belt and braces approach, to give the best possible chance of longer term future reliability too.
In summary, if you are looking for a well sorted Land Rover® Lightweight, then this could be for you. It is very unusual for us to see a rebuilt Lightweight such as this – so for those of you which must have a galvanised chassis, this is well worth considering… the increasing rarity of good quality military Lightweights means we don’t see ones of this quality very often. With the added bonus of MOT & Tax Exemption, along with Classic (and military) insurance options, it should also prove to be a strong asset for the future, whilst being cost effective and low hassle to own in the meantime.
