Description
The only Bristol 407 Zagato in the world was revealed to the public in 1961. It was planned as a competitor for the Aston Martin db4 in the British market. This car was built on a standard 407 saloon chassis; future production was to be on a shortened chassis. The car was built with a 313c. i. Canadian Chrysler engine. This engine was soon replaced by the 318c. i. engine which was on the display stand at the Geneva show along with the car itself. At the engine redline of 5, 100rpm the equivalent speed is 131mph; L. J. K Setright, the premier Bristol historian, claims that one test reached well over 140mph. The car is equipped with a Chrysler Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission; some owners of 407/ 408/ 409/ 410 saloons have replaced this transmission with a lighter aluminium-case transmission featuring a ‘lock-up’ top gear for better mileage. The car has been invited to the prestigious pebble beach concours twice, 1997 and 2019, when Zagato-bodied cars were featured. It has also been shown at the Louis Vuitton concours at Bagatelle Park in Paris. In fact in ‘19 it was requested at Pebble Beach as it’s one of Andrea Zagato's favourite designs.
