The Dino Spider is a testament to the collaboration between Fiat and Ferrari. Named “Dino” in honour of Enzo Ferrari’s son who played a pivotal role in designing the V6 engine used in Ferrari’s Formula 2 race cars.
In the late 1960s, Ferrari faced a production challenge: FIA regulations for Formula 2 required manufacturers to produce at least 500 engines to gain accreditation. Limited by its production capacity, Ferrari partnered with Fiat to manufacture the engines needed to meet the FIA’s regulations. Fiat’s technical office paired the sophisticated Ferrari engine with a five-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive and disc brakes to produce a sports car with a motorsport pedigree. Pininfarina’s son Segio and son-in-law Renzo Carlis designed the Fiat Dino Spider, which was billed as the “Dream car attainable by many”.
