Vehicle history:
The Lancia 037 – an exceptional collector’s car with a strong sense of factory heritage and a notable driver pedigree. This Lancia 037 belongs to the rare specimens that stand out not only for their design, but above all for their place within the context of the Chardonnet works team.
Based on clues from its original period of use, this vehicle is believed to have been part of Chardonnet’s training, development and press-vehicle fleet—the team closely associated with Lancia, in which, among others, Jean-Claude Andruet played a defining role. Cars of this kind were typically used for tuning, preparation and media presentations away from pure race-day competition, and today they’re just as sought-after by collectors as classic works racing cars.
In France, Lancia vehicles were marketed by the independent importer André Chardonnet. He built a highly successful motorsport division, and one of his drivers was Jean-Claude Andruet, widely regarded as the most talented French rally driver of his era. He was a two-time Rally Champion of France (1968 and 1970), European Rally Champion in 1970, winner of the “Tour de France Auto” (1972, 1981, 1982), the “Tour de Corse” (1968, 1972, 1974), Monte Carlo in 1973, and he also has numerous Le Mans 24 Hours appearances with class wins. Andruet was a well-respected driver who sat behind the wheel of an Alpine A110 and a Lancia Stratos before driving the 037 for the Chardonnet team—another car with which he also won numerous rallies in 1983 and 1984.
Alongside the 037 race car, which he campaigned in the French championship, Andruet also owned a reconnaissance vehicle for route familiarisation. It was finished in the same livery as the race car, but mechanically it matched the production version—apart from a few improvements that Chardonnet had made at the time. This is the exact vehicle we are offering here. This 037 was used in particular for opening stages and for demonstrations. The car carries chassis number ZLA151AR0 00000109 and left the works on 29 July 1983. It is officially listed in the 037 register as an Andruet test car and belongs to the 200-series of 037s.
Today, the vehicle shows 12, 368 km on the odometer, which corresponds to its original mileage, and it has retained its race livery: a blue-and-white Chardonnet paint scheme with the main sponsors of the day, Pioneer and Total. The car is remarkably well preserved and in faultless driving condition. The race car, by contrast, was destroyed. This 037 is an original and essential piece for any rally collection.
A more recent chapter powerfully underlines the vehicle’s special status:
As part of the AVD Histo Monte 2026, this Lancia 037 was selected for an exclusive presentation run and prepared to the highest technical standard.
The highlight:
Walter Röhrl, multiple-time rally world champion and one of the most influential figures in motorsport, drove this car personally on the legendary final stage from Monte Carlo to Cannes—including the iconic climb via the Col de Turini.
This run was extensively documented. Among the available materials are:
– Photographs of Walter Röhrl in front of the Casino Monte Carlo
– Walter Röhrl’s original signature on the car
– Action shots on historic rally stages
This rare combination of authentic factory proximity and contemporary prominence gives the car an exceptional level of authenticity and collector interest.
