1989 FORD SIERRA 2. 9L GHIA 4X4 ESTATEA rare and highly specified Sierra with four owners, extensive history and considerable potential. The Ford Sierra was once a familiar sight on British roads, but examples of the more sophisticated and powerful derivatives have become increasingly difficult to find. This 1989 Ford Sierra 2. 9i Ghia 4x4 Estate is an especially interesting survivor, combining the range-topping Ghia specification with Ford’s 2. 9-litre V6, four-wheel drive and practical five-door Estate body. Finished in black, the car retains its original factory specification and has an especially appealing interior which appears largely untouched. The original Ford radio and graphic equaliser remain in place, together with the comprehensive equipment expected of the Ghia model. The exterior is less polished and will require attention, although the car offers considerably more potential than its present appearance might initially suggest. It is understood that, with sympathetic preparation, some localised paintwork and general recommissioning, the car could be transformed into a highly presentable example. Importantly, it starts and drives well, providing an excellent basis for the next stage of its life. First registered on 10 May 1989, the Sierra was sold as a used car approximately one year later for £11, 495, with the original invoice retained within the history file. It has had just four owners from new, an unusually low number for a car now approaching four decades old. Its later history is equally interesting, having appeared in several television programmes, adding a further layer of provenance to an already unusual car. The accompanying history file is a particular feature. An interesting period detail is that the 2. 9i Ghia 4x4 Estate was the only Sierra derivative to feature air conditioning as standard, with neither the XR4x4 nor RS Cosworth receiving air conditioning as standard equipment. With 91, 085 miles recorded, the car is now an increasingly rare sight and represents an appealing opportunity for the enthusiast who appreciates the more unusual Ford performance and luxury models of the 1980s. While it will require work, the combination of its specification, originality, low ownership count, extensive documentation and interesting history makes it a car with plenty to commend it.
