Land Rover Defender 130 tour vehicle. 1990. Approx 180, 000miles, 300tdi
I bought this vehicle some two years ago with the intention of starting a tour business taking small groups of people on Intensive Spanish Language tours in Spain, (spanishlanguageholidays. co. uk) however, my circumstances have now changed and although my wife and I have started the company, we have decided not to use our own vehicle, but to rent a Spanish one instead. Hence, this vehicle is now for sale, and has hardly been used since purchasing it....
This a truly legendary vehicle, a 4x4 tour vehicle that has been used as a tour vehicle for Vagabond tours (and award winning Irish small group adventure tour company) and is known the length and width of Ireland. Since being brought back to the UK from Ireland (by myself two years ago) it was classified as a nine seater due to minibus import law. However, it was perviously a twelve seater. I still have the additional seats should the buyer wish to re-fit and re classify with the DVLA as a 12 seater. I believe this will be very straight forward being a landrover, now that the vehicle is registered as a MPV in the UK and not as a 'minibus'.
History... Originally registered in 1990 the vehicle entered service as an RAF Rapier 130. In 2002, with only 30, 000km’s on the clock, Vagabond tours bought the vehicle from Foley’s Specialist Vehicle’s in Essex who also carried out the conversion from open top pick up to minibus.
This included:
Removal of V8 Petrol engine, gearbox and driveshafts and replacing them with brand new 300 tdi diesel engine and drive train retrokit.
Construction of steel framed, and panelled body
Interior kitting out including 10 passenger seats in rear compartment and new front seats.
New bulkhead wiring to convert military set up to civilian one. Re-spray to black
Other enhancements:
The vehicle pas previously been wax oiled/ sealed on a regular basis. It is solid underneath. excellent chassis.
Heavy duty, 2” lifting rear springs and rear gas shocks.
Siemens analogue Tachograph fitted. If you are towing a decent sized trailer, then this is required in some countries. Adjustable height tow bar fitted with both 50mm ball and nato hitch converter.
Since then:
The vehicle has done brilliant work for Vagabond tours, taking passengers all over Ireland. It has been maintained to a very high standard to ensure reliable performance on tour. It is a brilliant workhorse.
Condition now
Performance:
Having 180, 000miles on the clock (clock in Kph, hence arrox 300k) the vehicle fitted with a 300tdi diesel engine runs very smoothly, lots of power and no know faults. Performance is as good as the day I got it and there are no clunks. The gearbox is great. It drives in a straight line and has excellent steering.
The vehicle has been very very reliable.
Bodywork:
Still in excellent condition. Regularly cleaned, oiled and maintained.
Obviously this is an unconventional vehicle and looks quite different. It is considerably larger than a regular landrover and the passengers can seat in comfort in proper minibus sesats with plenty of space, unlike other Land Rovers with their cramped seating.
The base of the rear compartment is aluminium and is in good condition above and below.
The chassis is also rust free.
Tyres:
Four good BF Goodrich AT’s (235 85 R16) and a spare. Wheels are in very good condition, the vehicle gets wash and waxed between tours and the wheels are silver, steel wheels.
Inside:
I have maintained the interior as well as possible. The front cab is in excellent condition and the rear, although used, is very good. The floor is covered in chequer plate lino. The seats are vinyl defender seats but with head rests added. The walls are lined with grey carpet.
A Kenwood stereo is fitted with two speakers in the front and four in the back. A small 15 watt PA system is installed for the driver to communicate with the passengers in the back. It can also be used to play an MP3 player.
Possible uses for the vehicle:
Huge family vehicle
Minibus for adventure centre, shooting estate, remote pub
Conversion into a camper
Conversion into mobile workshop
Sports team transport
Location:
The vehicle is currently in Cornwall. If you would like to get the AA or RAC to survey it here that’s no problem.
