Here for sale we have a smart station wagon Land Rover® Series 1 86'. The vehicle is presented in rare hard-top configuration (a soft top can be added at cost), with the addition of side windows and rear bench seats, which allow for the carrying of 7 passengers. The vehicle has just 3 former keepers, and has been with its previous owner for many years until he was unfortunately no longer able to drive it due to ill health.
On the outside, the vehicle has some nice period features, such as correct mirrors, bonnet mounted spare and even the correct rear wiper is in place - these are complemented by modern features such as the tow-bar and electrics which allow easy towing with the replacement of a more modern 5 cylinder Mercedes diesel engine and free wheeling hubs for better economy and to limit wear to the front axle. This diesel unit is smooth and refined and gives great use ability to such an old vehicle - so good economy and power can be enjoyed in unison.
On the inside, the vehicle has three recent 'Shovel-back' seats and a working heater, which keeps the cabin warm during the colder months. An overdrive is also fitted so that the vehicle can make better use of the more powerful engine. As mentioned previously, rear benches and side windows in the rear allow a station wagon type-experience, and the vehicle has deluxe matting throughout.
Out on the road, the benefit of the later Diesel engine really shows - this vehicle has far better performance than both the period petrol and diesel, which means it is far more useable in modern traffic. The overdrive allows for more relaxed higher speed cruising, and the extra capacity means that this Series 1 has some serious pulling power!
In summary then, if you have been hoping to purchase a Series 1 Land Rover® but can't afford the prices of the early 80" models, this should prove to be a sound investment for the future. With the addition of the later engine and overdrive, the vehicle is far more capable on road than its period counterparts - whilst still maintaining the period look that many hope to see, and being able to carry 7 people too!
