Description

Rally Preparation Services is extremely excited to offer this absolutely superb 1965 MGB Roadster suitable for pre-1965 FIA events as well as general classic events.

Many of us have a love affair with classic British sports cars and in many ways the MGB is the quintessential example. At its launch in 1962, Motor magazine reported ‘a delightful modern sports car with a marked bias towards a grand touring character, a pleasure to drive.’ Fine praise indeed but its predecessor, the much-loved MGA had been the best-selling sports car of all time so the new MGB had a very tough act to follow. It was the first monocoque design from MG but as is the way with MG featured a lot of carry over mechanicals. However, it seems the mechanical simplicity, good looks, low price, and honest charm were seen as assets by the buying public and over half a million were sold making it the new best-selling sports car by far at the time.

This example originally built into a competition car by the highly regarded Paul Merryweather was campaigned successfully and reliably on several events across the early nineties including winning the 1995 Historic Rally Championship. Other events saw the car competitive both at home and abroad, including tackling Philp Young’s 1998 Classic Marathon into Morocco.

As with any successful competition car the specification has evolved and improved over time. Clearly a lot of expertise, wisdom, time, and money have all been spent and all to the good. Here at Rally Preparation Services, we have seen and driven a lot of MGBs over time and we would suggest DNX 563C is now quite possibly the best sorted MGB rally car you will find! The engine is a later 5 bearing block that has been overhauled by Mass Racing Developments. The car produces 141bhp with a wonderfully flat torque curve and perfect fueling from a Weber 45 DCOE carburetor. The gearbox is a full synchro Special Tuning straight cut close ratio unit and the banjo axle houses a Quaife torque sensing LSD. Other rally preparation follows known best practice including installation of dash mounted fuse panel, sump and tank guards, laminated screen, battery cut off switch, co-drivers footrest, auxiliary lamps, and lamp guards.

Shortly after the car was delivered to us our Managing Director was heard saying on his return from a first road test with a big grin – “if you want an MGB rally car this one is as good as it gets!”

In our ownership the car has been actively campaigned both on HERO events and HRCR events with several impressive overall finishes and many class wins!

The car comes with a multitude of sundry restoration invoices, earlier FIA, FIVA and MSA documents as well as a BMH certificate.

The car is currently with RPS’ sister company, the SASCo storage facility and available for inspection.

All viewings and test drives welcomed by appointment at Rally Preparation Services.
