The long-hood era for the Porsche 911 was a time of considerable change. Conceived as a sportscar, built much like the outgoing 356 it replaced, it developed over the years a flair and style that served to define the brand for years to come. The search for the 356's replacement began in 1959. Porsche, seeking a much more powerful, larger, and more comfortable replacement, debuted the prototype 901 in September of 1963 at the Frankfurt Motorshow with production beginning a year later in 1964 alongside the last of the 356s. The model range expanded in 1967 with the addition of the 'S' model marking the beginning of the 911 as a genuine performance car, meeting requisites on both road and racetrack. Nineteen sixty-eight marked the beginnings of government influence on automobile design and emissions - later in 1969, the wheelbase was lengthened, and weight more evenly distributed throughout the chassis. By now the model range included three versions: T, E & S - the latter two equipped with a mechanical injection system. All were now powered by a motor displacing 2. 0-liters. From 1970 into 1971 with the 912 dropped and the 914 picking up as the introductory car, displacement further enlarged to 2. 2-liters.

Porsche delivered a 911 with the larger 2. 4-litre engine and a bigger 70. 4 mm stroke from August 1971, adding more power to all models and creating a punchier torque. The range ran until 1973, being replaced by the new impact-bumpered G-Series, which then ran until 1989.

A very rare find, this genuine UK-delivered F-Series 2. 4 Touring was built in 1973 but interestingly not road registered until January of 1975. This is possibly less surprising when one considers at the time we were in the middle of the 1973 OPEC oil crisis, with the public steering away from such luxuries as expensive continental sports cars. The Porsche was ordered new in a very period shade of Royal Purple with tan seating in cord, and Fuchs alloy wheels.

In previous ownership for some 26 years, in addition to servicing work the 911 enjoyed a bodywork restoration in 2019, which we understand included attention to the kidney bowls, a new bonnet and both front and rear windscreens. The roof lining and sound proofing were replaced at the time, as was the carpeting. In 2022 the 911 benefited from various remedial mechanical works, including a new clutch, attention to the brakes, replacement engine seals and a partial replacement of the oil lines.

Changing hands shortly afterwards, the 911 has more recently been enhanced with a repaint in its original shade, and a retrim of the seat centres. Offered with an extensive history file containing the original service book from dealer "Motortune Ltd" in West London, older MoT certificates and tax discs, receipts and documented restoration photos, this head turning and highly capable classic Porsche will be no doubt a welcome addition to any discerning Porsche collection.
