The Aston Martin DB2/ 4 MkIII, commonly referred to simply as the DB MkIII, was produced between 1957 and 1959 as the final and most developed evolution of the DB2 series. Powered by the W. O. Bentley-designed 2. 9-litre Lagonda straight-six engine, further refined by Tadek Marek, the MkIII introduced numerous mechanical and cosmetic improvements over its predecessor.
Notable enhancements included the distinctive DB3S-inspired front grille, a redesigned instrument panel, Girling disc brakes, a hydraulically operated clutch, and the option of a Laycock-de Normanville overdrive. The standard DBA engine, fitted with twin SU carburettors, produced 162 bhp, while the desirable factory twin-exhaust option increased output to approximately 178 bhp, enabling 0–60 mph in around 9. 3 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph. Even rarer were the DBD and DBB engine specifications, offering 180 bhp and 195 bhp respectively, making the MkIII one of the most capable British grand tourers of its era.
We are delighted to offer this exceptional example, which remained in single-family ownership from 1958 until 2013. Supplied new by Charles Sidney Ltd to Mr. Cree on 21 May 1958, the original sales invoice records the car as being finished in Peony with White Gold upholstery and specified with the desirable factory overdrive and twin-exhaust system. The purchase price was £3, 242 19s 6d, including 15 gallons of petrol.
Throughout its life, the car has been maintained to an exceptionally high standard. During the early 1960s, it received a bare-metal repaint in Gold after the original Peony finish developed paint blistering. Accompanying the car is an extraordinary history file, documenting decades of meticulous maintenance, ownership, and restoration. Following Mr. Cree's passing in 1997, ownership transferred to his son, at which point the Aston Martin had covered just 71, 000 miles.
Between 1997 and 1999, the car was entrusted to the renowned Aston Martin specialist Jack Moss of Four Ashes Garage, Stratford-upon-Avon, for a comprehensive restoration costing over £25, 000. The work included a body-off repaint, extensive chrome replating, clutch refurbishment, and numerous additional mechanical and cosmetic improvements. In May 2000, following a loss of compression in cylinder six, Jack Moss again carried out a substantial engine rebuild. The quality of this work is evident today, with the engine delivering crisp performance and a wonderfully smooth, refined note.
In 2013, "VBT 512" sold at auction for £220, 800 before being acquired by a longstanding client of our restoration company. Given our expertise in Aston Martin coachwork, the decision was made to undertake a sympathetic bare-metal restoration, returning the car to its original and highly attractive Peony Red finish. The restoration was completed over several years and to an exceptional standard. Since completion, the car has been enjoyed as intended, notably serving as the lead wedding car for the owner's son in Mayfair, performing flawlessly throughout.
Today, this remarkable DB2/ 4 MkIII presents with matching numbers, its original interior, and twin-exhaust specification, and one of the most comprehensive history files we have encountered.
