*** Update- New set of Genuine Jag rear brake pads just fitted. so now there are no fault codes on the VCM/ On board computer.***

there is an album here of over 100 photos.

- details above

Am assuming if you are looking at this you know what the “Insignia” version of the xj40 means? For those who do not, it was a bespoke edition of paintwork and interior, with an extended choice of colours and trim level.

The interior of this car really is something to behold. More like a rolls Royce than a standard jag. Everything is Leather inside and I mean everything! Dashboard, centre console, parcel shelf, cant rail, A/ B/ C posts all seating areas, knee bolster panels, even the fuse box covers! Its not normal jag leather either, but am ultra soft “semi- Aniline” leather. It makes the Daimler look low spec!
The paint work is Mineral Green Metallic (HFH paint code) aOnd Pale Stone two tone full leather interior (LFE/ BH). Of course these colours and trim was only available on Insignia models, hence the rarity

It features Green Maple wood veneers, which is possibly unique, as I have never seen this colour wood on any other Insignia, and its original not aftermarket.
There were only 6 RHD jags made in this colour scheme (but not sure what colour wood veneers the other have), so you can see how rare this car is. You are unlikely to ever see an identical one!

The carpets are 80% Wool Wilton carpet and not the standard Nylon type found in normal XJ40’s

The 1st owner was Jaguar cars. And the car boasts a “Coventry Reg” being L*** RVC.
The car would have been a dealer demonstrator for the Insignia options, hence why its fully specc’ed out.

I am very well known on XJ40. com and a JEC member, so am happy to talk about the car at length with anyone who is interested to know more information or has a specific question.
I have 4 other xj40s and a range rover all taking up my time, so am considering letter this one go to a caring home! This car will not go for cheap as its not your average 40!

GOOD Points

Just insure and drive away! Taxed until the end of November, 9 months MOT until 24th April 2013. V5 Present and in my name. 5 previous owners
Past the last MOT only needing bulbs and an exhaust clamp.

-below average mileage at only 108, 300 miles. Last owner before me had it 15yrs, and was kept garaged.

- all original Jag Handbook and leather wallet present. The car had a jag extended warranty up until 1997 with documents to prove. Information on previous owners present via letters from jag dealers.
Inside is the service booklet showing 10 service stamps including the first one by Jag at Browns lane itself, 4 stamps at HR Owen, 2 at Riders Jaguar Plymouth, and 3 independent garages too.

-HA FOX Southampton (Jag dealer) number plates present. Always a good look, though the front one is now cracked unfortunately. But still useable. Fitted with screw covers to hide the unsightly screws.

-Sunroof panel is perfect with no rusting edges. Very rare again!

-Full interior treatment with Gliptone Liquid Leather cleaner and conditioner. And that’s a hell of a lot of leather to treat! It now has that real leather smell all over again, with soft and supple leather!

-All known rust weakness of the XJ40 have been taken care of already!!! Very rare to find a car that’s had all this done already. Anyone who knows late model xj40 will know exactly what I am talking about! Most xj40 at this age now have many rusty areas present. This car does not. The car has had approximately 200+hrs of restoration work to bring it up to this standard. Fresh underseal has been applied to keep the weak points/ extremities in good condition for many years to come.
-front footwells are all dry and no water leaks!

Headlining is fully up and not sagging like many are by now! There are a few blemishes on it, but its still very presentable

-  Everything works! All electrics, windows, seat motors, Heating, sunroof, all interior and exterior bulbs, fogs lamps all intact (fronts can have a habit of burning out, but these are intact working order) heating on all speeds
-
-  Air Conditioning works perfectly! Rare to find a working system on these cars, as they are often neglected.
I have fitted a replacement condenser, Thermal switch, Trinary Pressure Switch and the whole system has been leak checked, flushed out and re-gassed by a professional air con engineer. it blows ice cold on all fans speeds!

-  OE Jag Alarm present and working, with jag single button 418mhz key fob. i replaced a door micro-switch to enable it to work properly.

-  Full jaguar tool kit is present and good condition, good useable spare wheel with Pirelli tyre, and all the jack is all there.

- I even checked every interior bulb is working, I like to have certain things all there.

-Refurbished cam cover with new jag sticker, radiator top and bottom support panels, new 6 new bushes for the radiator and air conditioning condenser. Again the cam covers usually all have flaking paint by now and the radiator support panels also rust. So this is taken care so no worries for many years about these items.

-Refrubished/ Powder coated “tactile panel” (upper horizontal chrome trim panel on bootlid)
- Engine bay, clean and shiny, as it should be. No dusty/ greasy bays here!

- Recent works also include

- replacement 120amp alternator, with genuine new jag drive belt

- Replacement front bumper.

-New fuel filter- often neglected, just fitted

-Front dampers and damper bushes have also recently been replaced, so it rides like a jaguar should, with no knocking or clunking

-Matching set of Pirellis P4000 tyres (OE spec) all round, with good tread on all wheels (5-6mm)

-Mud guards all present and good condition. These were removed to clean out any trapped dirt behind them, then reinstalled.

-Very rare heated FRONT screen, which has recently been replaced with a brand new one by the AA (so its unpitted and nice and clean). Was an optional extra that not many people picked, but this car has it. Only ever seen it on very few other xj40’s

-Just had engine oil and filter change using genuine jag filter and 8 Litres Castrol Magnatec 10W/ 40 semi- synthetic.

-Coolant change with could quality new coolant, using a 50% mix for maximum corrosion inhibition.

Very rare Insignia shiny chrome hubcaps!

Varta Battery- holds good charge and always starts first time.

I have just replaced the battery inside the key itself, so the little light comes on when you press the button (for locking doors in the dark)

All fluid levels are correct.

Drive shafts/ UJ’s have been greased using a grease gun on the grease nipples. Again often neglected service point.

Brakes work very well. New set of Genuine Jag rear brake pads just fitted!

Transmission smooth and strong, including the wonderful sports mode switch!

Original jag radio cassette in good working order and working and includes the all important security code(!) jag CD changer in the boot. Working electric aerial with good rubber grommet to keep the rain out! All the speakers are working too.

No Fault codes present on the onboard computer

All veneers are good except the ashtray.

Bad Points-

Cracked veneer on ashtray. Its all there but cracking and starting to lift. It is possible to source new maple veneers and stain it green. Though I have not managed to do it yet. I also have some info from a place selling green maple now too.

Various scratches/ imperfections on the paintwork- not that visible from a distance when its polished, but they are there and visible when you look closely, as you would expect on a 19yr old car. Those wishing to make this into a show car may want to repaint some areas?
The paint/ lacquer still has a good overall lustre and shine though, but its not perfect by any means!

Small dent in bodywork below the rear bumper, though its not too visible from most angles. Again very common to see this, all my other xj40s have the same.

-small bubbling area on the off side lower of the rear windscreen. Have not investigated it further, but it’s the only bubble on the car!

-a previous owner in the 90s fitted an aftermarket car phone. The phone is now gone but the wiring and a roof mounted small antenna remain. It’s a shame about this, but there is nothing I can do about it, without silly costs and hassle, the car is otherwise completely original looking.

There is a very tiny blow from the LH side exhaust, at the point where the back box meets the over axel pipe. I have used a new clamp/ sleeve to hold them tight together, as the original clamp has failed. The blow goes when its warmed up, but its there when cold. Some exhaust joint sealant may well fix this.
This is a classic failure point, and all my other xj40s have had issues here too. The RH side is all fine.

The carpets in this car should be White! Well they were once anyhow. They are hard to keep clean to be honest. I have tried to clean them many times but they wont go back to white am afraid. It’s the downside to wool carpets is they seem to hold onto dirt more than nylon does. The boot carpet however cleans up very well though.

-The bumpers are generally good but there are some bubbling areas on the chrome work, but only noticeable when you look very closely. The beams are strong and solid though.

-Only 1 key and alarm fob, but both work, and its not too difficult these days to get a spare cut. You can get one from a photo of the key even, or by supplying your vin and proof of ownership to a main dealer. spare 418mhz alarm fobs are available on ebay for £20-£30 and are DIY programable, unlike earlier or later type key fobs.

-  an area of the leather on the dash has lifted away from the backing. Its not that noticeable, and hasn’t bothered me really, but thought I would mention it.
the leather edging trim has come off from around boot floor carpet. you probably would not notice if i had not have said! i still have the leather, as it could possibly be sewn back on, so its there with the car.

The tracking may be very slightly out. Its not that noticeable, but it maybe worth correcting

I have tried to be as honest about the condition as possible. I strongly suggest you come and see the car if at all possible before bidding, in case there is anything I may have missed, and to do your own personal evaluation? The car is not your typical bog standard XJ40 sovereign. its in good condition and extremely rare, but its not concourse! It is a useable classic though, and prices for the best and rarest XJ40s are rising now, so a worthwhile investment. This really is a unique car, and its priced according. The majority of the hard work is done, so you could just drive and use this car with very little maintenance for now. Of course to keep it looking good and working well all jags need caring for.
I am quite fond of this car, so am not looking to give it away for nothing. This will suit a serious xj40 enthusiast like myself.
