Description

The 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Zagato was a masterpiece of pre-war engineering, combining lightweight design, racing pedigree and Italian savoir-faire. Designed by the legendary Vittorio Jano, the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport 5th Series is an evolution of the old 1, 500 cm3 Super Sport and represents the second-to-last and most advanced development. Only 106 examples of the Gran Sport 5th Series were built in 1931.

With victories including the 1929 Mille Miglia won by Giuseppe Campari and again the 1930 Mille Miglia, this time won by Tazio Nuvolari, the 6C 1750 Gran Sport was conceived to dominate endurance racing.

Powered by a 1. 75-litre supercharged inline-six DOHC engine, the Gran Sport produced 85–95 hp, an impressive figure for the era. With the Roots blower and a four-speed manual transmission, it could reach a top speed of around 100 mph (about 160 km/ h), making it one of the fastest road cars of the early 1930s. Its lightweight chassis, paired with independent front suspension and semi-elliptic leaf springs at the rear, offered exceptional agility and handling, crucial for competition racing.

Today, it remains one of the most coveted pre-war Alfa Romeos, celebrated for its racing heritage, rarity and timeless design.

All mechanical components, including the original engine, of this 1931 Alfa 6C 1750 Gran Sport Zagato were purchased over 40 years ago in Italy and, with a replacement chassis, the project was entrusted to the highly respected Italian restorer Gigi Bonfanti of Bonfanti Garage, Vicenza. Not only does Bonfanti Garage possess generations of experience with the marque, but at the time of construction they also used an original 6C 1750 Gran Sport Zagato that belonged to the owners’ closest friend as a reference. Gradually, over the following twenty years, all nuts and bolts were restored and the car was finally clothed in the stunning Zagato aluminium bodywork by coachbuilder Farina. Aerodynamically efficient and visually stunning, the Zagato body embodies the golden age of Motorsport.

Since completion, the car has appeared at almost twenty high-profile events over nearly two decades, winning Best of Show at the Mulhouse Auto Festival – 2004 Museums Concours d’Elegance; at the 2016 Targa Florio, appearing as one of five Italian Alfa Romeo Registo cars; and on display at the 2017 Padua Auto Antique Show.

In 2019, the car was sold to the current owner, a car-collecting enthusiast with a soft spot for great pre-war Italian automobiles.

The Alfa Romeo has been lightly used on the road and remains in superb concours-grade condition, benefiting from regular maintenance by the owner’s in-house mechanic.

Currently on Italian registration, this is an exceptional Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Zagato in an equally exceptional mechanical and aesthetic condition.
