Reduced price after previous buyer failed to come up with the cash.
With great sadness I am considering selling my 109 Dormobile. This is by far the earliest known by any Land Rover club, with number 72501. I bought it nearly 10 years ago with a view of restoring as family camper but as my wife keeps telling me, the kids will grow up and not want to go camping any more before this will happen. So facing the dilemma and lack of time I decided to buy a camper that has already been done.
Prior to my ownership I believe it last turned a wheel in 1989 when it was parked in a barn and left till I found it. It certainly has been used well and clearly enjoyed by the family who owned it. The cupboards are full of period accessories, medicine, supplies etc. Its as if it was transported from 1970s to now. It has all the correct Dormobile bits, all the seat frames, bunk beds, cupboard, cooker, sink and tap, table etc.
Very rare original spotlights and correct roof rack are also present along with all the right Dormobile badges.
The story from the previous owner was that his father worked at Land Rover factory and having heard that Martin Walter was about to commence build of 109 Dormobile conversions has placed an order for the very first one as the numbers reportedly started from 72500 for the first demo vehicle. I have no proof to corroborate this story but I believe there is no LR Dormobile in existence with the number lower than this.
This is a complete project, the chassis is not in a good state and has been patched up many times over the years. It does start and drive and gearbox actually feels good, also the engine is later Series 3 unit. The. bulkhead has been molested and patched and will require significant work. I have accumulated various panels for it which will come with the car. I also have a new Richards galvanised chassis and spare bulkhead which will be sold separately.
Any questions please ask, best to come and see the car for yourself, its definitely a piece of Land Rover and Dormobile history.
