Replacing the MGA in 1962 the MGB was manufactured until 1980 with over half a million derivatives produced. The lightweight design adding to overall vehicle strength. Wind-up windows were standard, and a comfortable driver's compartment offered plenty of legroom. The MGB achieved a 0–60 mph time of just over 11 seconds. The three-bearing 1, 798 cc B-Series engine produced 95bhp at 5, 400 rpm. It was one of the first cars to feature controlled crumple zones designed to protect the driver and passenger in a 30 mph impact.
Sitting upon a lovely set of Minilite style wheels, this flame red ‘B with black Mohair roof and leather (might be leatherette) seats is pretty as a picture and has obviously been cossetted throughout its more recent life spending its time in a dry garage and never being used in the rain.
Restored between 2010 and 2012 the engine was stripped and rebuilt, the bores lap honed and new piston rings fitted, the cylinder head modified to take unleaded petrol, the rocker shaft replaced and all new gaskets and hoses were fitted. The carburettors were also refurbished.
The bodywork was subjected to a serious amount of work including the fitting of –
New door skins, new centre cross member, new floor pans, new inner sills, new centre sills, new rear valence, new outer sills, new castle sections, new heal board extensions and all panels were fully welded and red oxided. All individual parts were fully painted.
Underneath everything was aircraft standard stone chip protected including the petrol tank.
New sound proofing and carpets were also fitted. New universal joints fitted to propshaft and steering column, rear axle sealed and fresh oil used, all brakes refurbished and resealed including new brake pads. New brake pipes and petrol pipes were also fitted. New batteries, new headlights, bowls and new loom.
And finally a new quality roof was fitted, new Minilite style wheels including the spare plus new tyres, new door handles, chrome stripes, locks and any parts that required replacing had new ones fitted.
The results of these endeavours are very apparent today with the restoration holding up extremely well. There is the odd age related mark and the odd minor stone chip, a small dent in one of the chrome strips and very early signs of surface corrosion on one of the wheel arched but the car looks fantastic and drives really well.
This is of course an overdrive model working in both 3rd and 4th gears this makes cruising a little more relaxing. Another addition is a Kenlowe fan which has been added along with the original fan, the previous owner being a belt and braces engineer.
Sitting in the boot is both a full tonneau cover and a roof down cover to ensure the roof tucks away nicely when the sun is shining.
The 'B is of course both tax and MOT exempt and was last presented for MOT on 17th May 2023 which it passed showing just 47, 023 miles with no advisories.
This one drives beautifully and is in genuine condition and has to be an appealing car for anyone wanting a practical classic that is attractive, fun, and easy to live with.
