Description
Here's an interesting car. It's a left-hand drive 2. 7-litre 1977 Porsche 911 Targa Sportomatic that has been backdated to look like an older car. We have been asked by its owner, who is emigrating, to sell it as an ongoing project.
Much of the work was done in Portugal, and only some of it has been invoiced. The engine has, we're told, been rebuilt and its appearance and photos taken in Portugal seem to back this up. We have had the engine running, but it needs setting up properly. It seems that the K-Jetronic fuel injection system has been overhauled and a new distributor has been fitted. The brakes look new. We don't know the state of the transmission.
The bodywork has, looking at the photos, had a full strip down and repaint in metallic green. It's been given a back date, with early-type bumpers and 'long bonnet'. The sills are a bit too slab-sided, which looks wrong to us, but they could be remodelled.
The interior has been nicely trimmed in brown with houndstooth seat inserts. It just needs putting back together properly.
To get the car up and running, at the very least, the engine will need setting up and got running, the brakes need properly fitting, an oil cooler is required, and the electrics will need checking over. We can, of course, work with a new owner to get the car sorted but, at this point, we are unsure exactly what is required.
Most of the photographs shown were taken in Portugal during the restoration.
The Sportomatic transmission was a rare option which Porsche offered from 1967 to 1978. This clever system was ahead of its time and allows clutchless gear changes with a conventional manual gearbox. As soon as you touch the gearstick to change gear, the clutch magically disengages without the need to press a pedal. If you are unable or unwilling to use a clutch pedal, then this is a novel and ideal solution.
The Porsche was originally sold in Germany, and was registered in the UK in 1981.
We are selling this Porsche strictly as a project on behalf of the owner, and offer no form of warranty. If you are interested, then you'd be most welcome to visit us, take a look at the car and chat it over with us.
