The Appeal

Hethel revived the ‘Elite’ moniker in 1974 for its Elan +2 replacement - a curious four-seater shooting break produced at the height of the ‘wedge’ era. Unlike the original Esprit, this striking new Lotus was not the work of Giugiro, but instead a homegrown design by one Oliver Winterbottom who would also go on to pen the Eclat. These two cars are credited as the last to feature direct technical input from Colin Chapman who is said to have devised the suspension and chassis.
The Elite is now a rare sight on our roads, so we’re excited to offer this highly original example which is ripe for rolling restoration. It’s been in storage since 1987, fortunately within a very dry garage belonging to the vendor’s neighbour. The brakes have recently been attended to and new tyres have been fitted along with a replacement exhaust, battery, fuel pump and a fresh cam belt. The chassis hasn’t faired quite so well, so restoration or replacement will be in order.
For those with a penchant for the ‘70s ‘wedge’, this running, driving Lotus Elite project is brimming with potential.

The History and Paperwork

  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • Offered without MOT
  • Six former registered keepers recorded

The Condition

  • As it’s made of glass fibre, the bodywork remains in good order with no notable signs of damage
  • The paintwork is old, faded and generally showing its age, but remains serviceable since there’s no mild steel underneath to protect
  • OEM wheels in good overall condition and shod with new tyres
  • The brightwork appears in good condition, while the plastic bumpers have some small imperfections
  • We’re informed that the chassis is heavily corroded in places so would benefit from replacement - the vendor suggests a replacement from Lotus Bits or conversion to an Excel chassis
  • The original interior is commendably well-preserved
  • The headlining has deteriorated, but a replacement kit is supplied
  • The upholstery presents very well for its age, with minimal wear to the seats and carpets
  • Smart veneers, instruments and switches
  • We’re informed that most of the electrics still work - no mean feat for an unrestored British car of this vintage

The Mechanics

  • Lotus 907 twin-cam in 2.0-litre form, fed by a duo of DellOrto carburettors
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Very smart engine compartment
  • Recent cam belt replacement
  • Reportedly showing good oil pressure
  • New fuel pump
  • Refurbished brakes with new master cylinder
  • New battery
  • New fuel tank
  • New exhaust
  • The vendor comments that the car drives well, recommending further recommissioning/restoration prior to resuming regular use
