The Appeal

It’s always a pleasure to describe a car that has a completely documented history from the day it was purchased, and this Honda is a good example.  Purchased new in October 1987 from J Sheppard & Sons, a Honda main dealer in Hove, Sussex it has spent its entire life in Shoreham on Sea just a few miles away.  It was bought for use by the purchaser’s wife as they also owned another Honda that he used for longer journeys.  The Civic has covered an average of 1,000 a year from new, mainly for local journeys and has always been garaged which explains its well preserved state.

Known for their reliability the Civic is becoming a bit of a cult car with good examples being a rare find. This one, with its automatic gearbox, is even rarer, and we think you’d struggle to find one anywhere near this condition.

The Interior

  • Perfect light grey patterned cloth seats
  • Clean dark grey carpets
  • Optional rear seatbelts

Open the door of the Civic and you are greeted by an almost entirely original and amazingly well preserved interior. The cloth seats show no wear or damage of any kind.  The rear seats look like they have never been used, despite having been equipped with optional seatbelts when new.  The carpets are also in excellent condition with very little wear and no damage. Looking at the dash area nothing has been altered, and all the various controls operated perfectly.  The odometer shows just 34,557 miles which we know to be absolutely genuine.  The door cards are clean and untouched, although we think that the window winder handles may not be the originals, they are period correct.

There is a Sony radio/cassette (with removable front) mounted in the dash which operates as it should. Moving to the boot area the hinged glass hatch opens easily (and stays open) and the clean rear shelf folds back to access the boot space below.  The grey boot carpet is clean with no stains.  Beneath the carpet is a hardboard cover for the spare wheel and tools that are all present and mounted correctly.  There is no evidence of any damp and the paint is all factory fresh.

Overall the inside of the Civic shows merely the lightest wear, and is as close to new as you could hope to find.

The Exterior

  • Smart silver paint
  • Straight panels with no dents or stone chips
  • 13” steel wheels with Honda caps and good Avon tyres

A walk round the Civic doesn’t take long!  We forget how much larger cars have become in the past 25 years. Study the paintwork closely and you will find a few places that give away the age, but nothing major. On the driver’s side rear corner, just above the indicator you will spot some minor bubbling in the paint but that’s about it for paint damage.  The sides of the Civic are remarkably free of dings and dents and remain straight and flat. There are few stone chips, as legacy of short local journeys.  As with all cars of the era that had grey or black plastic bumpers there is some age related fading, which also particularly noticeable in the rear light panel around the CIVIC script.

At the front the bumpers have minor scuff damage on both corners, and there are some marks long the plastic side protection mouldings (which incidentally were a factory option). These are just very minor cosmetic imperfections that with a typical trim dressing product applied would hardly be seen from normal viewing distance.

The glass is all intact with no chips to the screen and original security etching to the side glass. The wheels are basic 13 inch steels with Honda logo centre caps, all in good undamaged condition and the tyres are a lightly worn set of Avon Turbosport CR22s.

All in all the Civic is as original as could be, with just light age related wear.

The Mechanics

  • Regular servicing
  • Original and tidy under the bonnet
  • Impressively fresh and solid underside
  • Adjusted to run on unleaded fuel at racing legend John Cooper Honda Garage in Ferring,, West Sussex in 1988

Reading the charming handwritten note from the original owner’s wife tells us that the Civic was a treasured possession, carefully maintained and always garaged. This explains the well preserved condition, and along with the exceptionally low mileage, and regular visits to the original dealer and John Cooper garages for servicing, we can be pretty sure that the Civic will prove to be a reliable proposition.  Known for their reliability in period these Hondas came from a time where if you wanted trouble free motoring, you bought from Japan!

Looking at the underside there is merely a light dusting of oxidisation on the running gear that gives away the age.  The floor is flat and solid with a good covering of factory applied underseal.

Summary

This Civic deserves to go to someone who will appreciate the well preserved condition. perhaps it should be part of a collection of low mileage rarities? We think this is a real gem, and we hope that its new owner will carry on giving it the care and attention it has always had.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
