The Appeal
If there’s a list of ‘future 90s classics’ then Fiat’s fabulous Coupe is surely nailed right up near the top. Chris Bangle’s slashy, sculptural car is one of the most distinctive and characterful cars that the Turin firm has conceived in the last 30 years. Clever details like the cutaway arches, hodden door handles, body colour dashboard and solid aluminium fuel filler all make the Coupe a classic delight in the manner of Fiat’s vintage models.
Of course, the one you want is this car, the tyre-scrabbling 220bhp Turbo with the warbly 2L five-pot 20V engine. It is one of the last built at Pininfarina’s works with the 5spd box, which provides longer gearing and a quicker 0-100 mph dash than the later 6spd unit. Finished in stand-out Giallo Ginestra with black leather cabin, it is a really tidy car that benefits from a long list of renovations.
The history file includes a detailed handwritten note documenting renovations. It’s undated but extensive, including timing bvelt, new exhaust and interior retrim. The latter seems to have done away with that Coupe bugbear - sticky switches. The current MOT runs to late June 2027 with a single advisory, reinforcing the sense of a tidy, sorted car.
The Coupe is just at that point where it still works as a daily, or could be squirrelled away for weekend treats and shows.
