The Appeal
BMW has experienced some ebbs and flows in terms of vehicular styling over its 100-year history, but the 1980s were a real high-water mark. The Hofmeister kink was a dominant design element, round single or double headlamps established a family resemblance between models, and the sinuous lines of models like the E24 6-Series proved irresistible to buyers.
This particular car is a coveted 635 CSi, presented to market as a partially restored project. As such, there are many elements future owners won’t have to worry about. The list of works carried out to date would run to many paragraphs, having cost an estimated £40,000. Highlights include a fully refurbished engine with new piston rings and rod bearings, a new clutch and replacement front suspension and running gear. Aesthetic upgrades include a new windscreen and surrounding trim, new side fenders, and a replacement headlight/grille/bumper combination. At the same time, period features like the original Alpina front valance have been retained, while the interior has many original buttons and instruments. Perhaps the most striking aspect of all is the gorgeous metalwork, clad in Crimson Red paint and arguably looking better than it would have done on the production line.
This project is largely complete, but it still requires a few components, including a radiator and air conditioning condenser. There is minor re-upholstering required, particularly on the Recaro multi-contour seats, while the rear suspension needs to be refurbished to bring it up to the standard of the (fully refurbished) front. The engine has been installed but not connected to the drivetrain, so it will turn over without running.
For someone with mechanical competence and an appreciation of the E24’s beauty, this largely completed restoration project represents a unique opportunity to put a personal stamp on a car which in many respects is as good as new – if not better in some areas.
