The Appeal
The Porsche 964 RS Cup is among the most revered competition cars of the air-cooled era. It was purpose-built for the Porsche Carrera Cup, the single-make championship that replaced the 944 Cup series and frequently ran as a support event for Formula 1.
The 1992 model year marked a major turning point for the 964 Carrera Cup. While the 1990 and 1991 cars were based on the standard Carrera 2 chassis, the 1992 and 1993 models were extensively upgraded to the newly introduced 964 Carrera RS platform, transforming them into far more focused track machines.
This change brought significant improvements across the board. The chassis evolved from the lightweight Carrera 2 shell to the Carrera RS (N/GT) body, now factory seam-welded for substantially increased stiffness and durability under heavy track use.
The 3.6-litre ‘M64’ engine was also revised, producing 275hp and 314Nm, up from 265hp and 310Nm in the earlier cars. Suspension was further lowered by an additional 20mm over the already aggressive 55mm drop of the 1991 cars, improving both centre of gravity and aerodynamic performance. Finally, the braking system was upgraded with the introduction of manually switchable ABS, replacing the always-on system of earlier models and giving drivers greater control in specific racing scenarios, including emergency braking and low-grip situations.
This particular example was used by Porsche as an exhibition car in 1992 and 1993, taking part in several standalone Cup races with various guest drivers before being registered for road use in 1994. It arrived in Spain in 1999, where it was registered in Madrid and later placed into a private collection. The current owner commissioned a restoration by Spanish specialist SMC Motorsport using genuine Porsche parts, and a detailed restoration dossier accompanies the car. It retains a 1993 verification seal on the ECU, both as a sticker and a metal tag. The car previously wore the livery used by Mika Häkkinen when he won at the Monaco Porsche Supercup round in 1993, and was selected by Porsche Ibérica as the centrepiece display vehicle for a TAG Heuer event in Madrid. TAG Heuer International subsequently expressed interest in showcasing the car at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix with Patrick Dempsey, though the owner declined the request.
With a well-documented history and a thorough restoration by a marque specialist, this is a notable opportunity to acquire one of Porsche's most focused purpose-built competition cars.
